If Toulouse-Lautrec were with you in rehab, he might say, “Just take it one day at a time, my friend”—in French, of course. When he was in his cups, he famously carried a hollowed-out cane filled with alcohol, as to never run out (don’t get any ideas). Hang this on your meeting room wall; it might seem a bit pretentious—unless you actually are doing rehab in gay Paris, circa 1880. But who cares? We’re sober, not perfect, and a touch of pretentiousness could be just the spark for a heartfelt talk about what’s not working for a friend in need.
