Ia Orana Maria (We Hail Thee Mary) is a colourful Madonna work from the artist’s first Tahitian period. Mary is depicted as a Tahitian woman wearing a red sarong with white flowers as the baby Jesus sits serenely on her shoulder, both mother and sun are adorned with gold halos. Two worshippers stand nearby with an angel in a pink dress and blue and yellow wings bowing behind them. Colourful red and green tropical fruit sits on the table in the foreground. I was originally happy about my purchase and Nana loved the gift. HOWEVER, the description specifically says that these are microwave and dishwasher safe, BUT the first time Nana put this mug in the dishwasher it was destroyed. Not impressed..
