The Grand Army of the Republic was formed by the Union Veterans of the Civil War (Army, Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service) in order for them maintain communications with each other and to give a political voice to the veterans. It was formed on April 6, 1866 on the principles of "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty." Thus 2016 is the 150th Anniversary (i.e., sesquicentennial) of the formation of the GAR. The GAR advocated for Memorial Day as a National Holiday. The legal heir of the GAR is the SUVCW or Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. We occasionally post material that has historical relevance to an event, anniversary or other celebration/commemoration related to the GAR, SUVCW or the Civil War. A portion of your purchase will go to the Willard Camp #154 of SUVCW, a non-profit organization in Albany, NY.
