Fort Union Postcard
When New Mexico became United States territory after the U.S.- Mexican War, the army established forts near the Rio Grande. Later these garrisons were relocated near the Native American tribes. Fort Union was established in 1851 as the guardian of the Santa Fe Trail. There were three periods of constructions, the actual remains belong to the third fort, which was the largest in the South.
