Flying Dragon Clipper sailing ship 1858 Samuel G Reed is listed in Boston city 1800s as a wine merchant. He and his partner Reuben Wade owned and operated Reed, Wade & Co. The clipper ships represented the expeditious fashion in which Reed, Wade & Co. imported their wines from foreign or exotic ports. In nineteenth century America Samuel G. Reed was also known for owning the largest fleet of clipper ships in the country. Reed, Wade & Company at their height owned about 20 clipper ships, many of these built and launched during the 1850s. Every time the firm launched a new ship beautiful Reed clippers appeared in local papers. The period of clipper ships lasted from the early 1840s to the early 1890s. At the 'crest of the clipper wave' year of 1852, there were 200 clippers rounding Cape Horn. Up to 400 clipper ships were built, between 1840s to the early 1890 The only intact survivor is Cutty Sark, which was preserved as a museum ship in 1954 at Greenwich.
