Flageolet Player on Cliff Paul Gauguin Postcard

The Flageolet Player on the Cliff by Paul Gauguin, oil on canvas 1889, is a painting of a boy and girl by a dramatic cliff side in the French province of Brittany, the young man playing a flageolet woodwind flute while the girl reclines in her white bonnet, grasping a scythe. Gauguin paints the vista in bold, parallel brush strokes of closely valued, tonal colours that flatten form but are at once heightened and subtle. His mature, Post-Impressionist emerged during his period of work in Brittany, after his famous period of work with his fellow artist Van Gogh.
