The red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) is an ancient symbol of Wales, the exact reason for which remains a debate among historians, although legend says it was on the battle standard of King Arthur. The green and white field represents a leek--another symbol of Wales-- purported to be attributed to St. David's request during a battle against the Saxons (which took place in a leek field) that his Welsh soldiers wear a leek in their helms so they could tell friend from foe.
