This poster has the first known poem to be published by an African American poet, Jupiter Hammon (1711 - c. 1806), in 1761 titled An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries. The poem illustrates how many slaves drew meaning from their existence through a deep and profound connection with God. Hammon, known as a founder of African American literature and a well-respected preacher, was born into slavery at Henry Lloyd's estate on Lloyd Neck, Long Island, New York. He served the Lloyd family his entire life.
