Fireweed Variegated Blossoms, Unalaska Island Postcard

Annual fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) grows in two varieties on Unalaska Island. The larger variety grows to about 3 feet tall and always has magenta coloured blossoms. The smaller variety only grows to about 2 feet tall and it sometimes has variegated blossoms with a mixed colouring of white, pink and magenta, although solid magenta coloured blossoms are sometimes present on the plant along with the variegated flowers. The smaller fireweed with the variegated flowers blooms later than the larger species. Fireweed is a member of the evening primrose family.
