Fine Arts Building, 1893 Columbia Exposition Postcard
The Fine Arts Building is the only remaining structure from the 1893 Columbia Exposition. We know it today as the Museum of Science & Industry, which was the third name this building has had. From 1894 until 1921 this building was the first home to the Field Museum. The building sat and deteriorated for five years until restoration began in 1926. By 1933 work was done the original plaster was replaced with limestone. What was the front of the building became the back. Otherwise the building looks pretty much as it did in 1893. This is part of our ChiTownViews series of postcards featuring people, places and events from Chicago’s history. On our ChiTownView YouTube station we have a video slideshow of the fair as well as links to maps of the exposition. http://youtu.be/tJROOVf85Fc
