While the tools have changed, the technique has not. These unusual haystacks are formed around poles. They are raked and combed until they are all oriented into that shapes. Rain sheds off of them so they don't rot or fester. They are built up in layers, letting them dry with plenty of air space. This hay will determine if their animals starve during the long winter or not. A lot of work had to be done to keep a farm going.
