False Indigo (Baptisia australis) Sticker

Baptisia australis (Blue False Indigo) is a North American native perennial plant in the Pea family (Fabacea). It grows along riverbanks and in woody thickets, and develops black seed pods that rattle in the wind. Baptisia tolerates dry sites and poor soil. Native Americans used Baptisia as an antiseptic for wounds, and for bruises, poor circulation and sores. Settlers tried using it as a dye, but it was not a good substitute for actual Indigo (Indigofera), as the sap generally turns slate blue when exposed to the air.
