Ernst Haeckel's World's End 1882 Postcard

Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist, naturalist, professor, zoologist, physician, philosopher and more! On November 21, 1881, he arrived at the harbour of Columbo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His plan was to study the flora and fauna in “that highest and most marvellous variety of form” which was on the island. He had a range of reasons for travelling to Ceylon: his childhood longing for adventure , scientific reasons and not to mention ambition, and — when we keep the illustrations he would later create in mind — artistic ambition as well.
