Engineers Removing a Gun for General Sherman 1864

A classic image from Zazzle's extensive collection of historic American Civil War photographs and lithographs. This commemorative card features a reproduction of a photograph of the General Sherman at the sea campaign. After marching through Georgia for a month, Sherman stormed Fort McAllister on December 13, 1864 and captured Savannah itself 8 days later. Here, army engineers are removing an 8-inch Columbiad gun from Fort McAllister preparatory to Sherman's further movement northward. The removed guns were stored at Fort Pulaski; taken in December, 1864.
