During the mid-1990’s I had the endurance and strength to frequently paint large canvases outdoors. This Monument Valley scene is an excellent example of that period of my work. Looking to the west, I painted Camel Butte, the Thumb, and the Three Sisters rising from the desert floor. There’s an emotion and feeling in the paint that only painting outdoors can achieve. I worked several afternoons at the same spot, and although it was very hot, visually the light was actually ‘cool’ or blue-ish, creating intense orange and red reflected light in the shadows.
