Embarrass, MN Skunks Vintage Baseball Team 1934 T-Shirt

This fictional baseball club from Minnesota had no equal in the Depression Era. The Land of 10,000 Lakes was home to one of the greatest fictional baseball teams of all time. In 1934, America was deep in the Great Depression. Hope and optimism were absent from nearly every corner of life, except for one tiny bastion of baseball excellence in far northeastern Minnesota. The Embarrass Skunks of the fledgling Northern Swamp League were the toast of semi-pro baseball in 1934. With sluggers like Joe “The Hammer” Nelson and Jacob “The Anvil” Anderson, the Skunks easily led the league in runs per game. Flamethrowers like Bill “Juice” Hansen and Larry “Volcano” Larsen helped the Skunks post the second lowest earned run average in the league. Due to the ongoing economic struggles of the Great Depression, the Northern Swamp League was only able to field six teams in the storied 1934 season. The Embarrass Skunks dominated that season with a sparkling record of 38 wins against only 9 losses, leaving the 2nd place Minot Marmots in their dust. The Skunks won the league championship series 3 games to 1 on a hot September afternoon with nearly 3,500 fans in attendance. According to the local newspaper, The Embarrass Yodeler, Skunks team manager, Mike “Ole” Olsson celebrated the championship by doing a Lindy Hop around the bases. All-Star catcher, Walter “The Ball” Dahl summed up the entire season by declaring, “Northern Minnesota will never see a better baseball club than this one right here!”. Dahl proved to be prophetic as the Skunks never managed another winning season until they were disbanded in 1942.
