Elephants in Chobe National Park Botswana Postcard

Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana, is one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations and is renowned for having one of the largest concentrations of elephants in the world—estimated at over 120,000. Covering about 11,700 square kilometres, the park encompasses diverse ecosystems, from lush floodplains and riverine forests along the Chobe River to dry savanna and woodland. The riverfront area is especially famous for boat safaris, where visitors can watch elephants wading and swimming, alongside hippos, crocodiles, and a wide array of birdlife. Beyond elephants, Chobe is home to lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and numerous antelope species. The park is divided into distinct regions, each offering unique experiences: the Chobe Riverfront, the remote Savuti marshes known for predator action, and the Linyanti wetlands, a haven for birdwatchers. Accessible from the town of Kasane, Chobe can also be combined with trips to Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zimbabwe or Zambia, making it a key stop on many southern African safaris.
