In ancient cultures such as the Native American tribes, the gaillardia flower was believed to be a symbol of strength and courage. In the language of flowers, they symbolize charm, joy, happiness, and modesty. It is the official flower of Wallonia. The school colours of Texas State University are maroon and old gold, a combination inspired by the gaillardia.
