Edouard Manet - Laundry 2 Inch Square Button

Laundry (Le Linge), painted by Édouard Manet in 1875 in oil on canvas, captures a quiet domestic moment in a sunlit garden, where a woman washes linen in a tub while a young child stands beside her, tugging at a pail of suds. White laundry hangs to dry among the foliage, catching flashes of sunlight against the greens, blues and greys of the garden. Painted with loose, luminous brushwork and a strong sense of open-air light, the work turns an everyday task into a vivid image of modern life. Rejected by the Salon jury in 1876, it was subsequently exhibited by Manet independently in his studio. Poet Stéphane Mallarmé later singled out Le Linge in his defence of Manet and Impressionism, praising the new art’s ability to recreate nature through light, air and touch.
