Cuenca just may be the most beautiful city in the Americas. This, the "new cathedral," looked pretty old to us. But its construction began in 1880, making it quite new by South American standards. Officially the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, it is one of the largest in the Americas. The awe inspiring arches, marble, alabaster and stained glass are incredibly beautiful. But it's the first view of the cathedral, from the outside, the domes, which first draw the amazement of the visitor. The "old cathedral," across the main plaza from this one, was built in 1557.
