Echidna Button

The short beaked echidna is found throughout Australia from semi-arid to snowy alpine areas, the widest distribution of any Australian animal. Their body is covered in fur and spines, providing excellence defence against predators. They have no teeth, their diet consists of termites, ants and beetle larvae. Very strong claws are used to break open logs etc looking for termites. The echidna is a monotreme, a mammal that lays eggs. Echidnas are a protected species but they are threatened by land clearance, introduced predators and death caused by vehicle accidents.
