Dust Band Around the Nucleus of the Black Eye Gala

This is a Hubble Space Telescope photograph of the galaxy Messier 64 (M64), which is located about 17 million light years away. The black band at the front is formed of dust. This was created by the collision of M64 with another galaxy, which may have taken place over a billion year ago. Thanks to the appearance of the dust cloud, M64 is sometimes also known as the 'Black Eye Galaxy' or the 'Evil Eye Galaxy'. Credit: NASA and The Hubble Heritage Team (AURA/STScI). Acknowledgment: S.
