Janesville was home to many Native American tribes before the settlement of people from the East. They were forced out of their lands to make room for new settlers with the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In the early 1830's, a woodsman and city planner arrived at Rock County. He wanted to name the budding village "Blackhawk" after the famous Sauk leader, Chief Black Hawk, but his proposal was turned down. After some discussion, it was decided that the town would be named after Janes himself, so in 1835, Janesville was founded.
