Dja Faunal Reserve Cameroon Postcard

Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site in southeastern Cameroon, is one of Africa's largest and most well-protected rainforests. It is famed for its remarkable biodiversity, being almost completely encircled by the Dja River which forms a natural boundary. The reserve protects 90% of its pristine ecosystem, a sanctuary for a vast array of primates, including the Western Lowland Gorilla and Central Chimpanzee, as well as the elusive Forest Elephant. The reserve is a mosaic of dense tropical forest, swamp, and riverine habitats, characterized by rapids, waterfalls, and unique 'bais' or forest clearings. Accessible primarily through the village of Somalomo, it offers a profound experience of untamed nature. A visit offers not only wildlife encounters but also a glimpse into the traditional lives of the Baka indigenous people, who have coexisted with the forest for generations.
