It also honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, who is worshipped during the festival. For Jains, Diwali marks the day when Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, attained Nirvana or liberation. For Sikhs, Diwali is the day Guru Hargobind Ji was freed from imprisonment by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. For Buddhists, especially in Nepal, Diwali is celebrated as a symbol of the victory of King Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism and his renunciation of violence.
