Yes, it’s true, Uranus is a gas giant. In fact, our seventh planet is stinking up the entire solar system along with its pals Jupiter, Saturn & Neptune. Of course the joke here is in how you pronounce Uranus, but surprisingly, the planet was not named after the lower region of the human anatomy nor was it done as a joke. It was named after the ancient greek deity of the sky Uranus, the father of Kronos (Saturn) and grandfather of Zeus (Jupiter). Although this fact is not well known, Sir William Herschel, who discovered the planet in 1781, originally wanted to name it "George’s Star" after King George III. The American colonists, however, were quick to offer the suggestion of "Planet A**hole", also in King George’s honour, but Herschel settled on Uranus as a compromise (no, not really.)
