Deptford Pink Wildflower Floral Postcard

The Deptford Pink, Mountain Pink, Grass Pink, or Dianthus ameria, originally came from Europe and is a member of the Carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). This demure deep pink wildflowers bloom in Shenandoah National Park from May to September and favour dry fields and roadsides. I found this lovely little flower in a sunny meadow area in the middle of the forest. The common name refers to Deptford, England (now a part of London), where the flower was once abundant. This wildflower has been rapidly decreasing in Britain, now classified as vulnerable and protected in its natural habitat; however, it now grows throughout North America and Europe.
