Decoding the Numbers: Plastic Recycling Symbols T-Shirt
In the world of waste management, symbols play a crucial role in guiding us towards better environmental practices. The image you see here features a familiar sight: the recycling symbol surrounded by numbers and letters. But there's more to these symbols than meets the eye.
At the heart of this image is the universal recycling symbol, a Möbius strip of arrows chasing each other in an endless loop. This symbol represents the cyclical nature of recycling, where materials are continuously repurposed, reducing the need for virgin resources and lessening our environmental impact.
Now, look at the numbers and letters around the central symbol. These are the Resin Identification Codes (RICs), a system introduced in 1988 by the Society of the Plastics Industry to help recyclers and the general public identify different types of plastic. Each number, from 1 to 7, represents a different type of plastic resin, and understanding these can make a big difference in how we handle our waste.
**1 – PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate):** This is the most commonly recycled plastic, used in soda bottles and many food containers. PETE is known for its strength and is often recycled into products like polyester fibres and new containers.
**2 – HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene):** Found in milk jugs, detergent bottles, and toys, HDPE is a sturdy plastic that is recycled into items like piping, plastic lumber, and new containers.
**3 – PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):** PVC is used in pipes, vinyl flooring, and some food packaging. Recycling PVC is challenging due to its chlorine content, but it can be repurposed into products like flooring and panelling.
**4 – LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene):** This flexible plastic is used for grocery bags, bread bags, and some food wraps. LDPE is often recycled into products like garbage can liners and floor tiles.
**5 – PP (Polypropylene):** Found in yogurt containers, straws, and bottle caps, PP is tough and resistant to heat. It's recycled into items such as signal lights, battery cables, and trays.
**6 – PS (Polystyrene):** Known commonly as Styrofoam, this plastic is used in disposable coffee cups, plastic food boxes, and egg cartons. PS recycling is not as widespread, but it can be turned into insulation, light switch plates, and other products.
**7 – Other:** This category includes various plastics not covered by the first six types, like acrylic and nylon. These plastics are often used in products like sunglasses and computer cases. Recycling these materials is complex due to their varied nature.
By understanding these symbols and their meanings, we can all become more effective recyclers. Knowing which plastics are more easily recyclable helps us make better choices in our daily lives and supports the broader effort to reduce waste and protect our planet.
So next time you see these numbers and symbols, you'll know the story behind them and the importance they hold in our journey towards sustainability. Happy recycling!

Great t-shirt!!! Quality is amazing and the colours are vibrant. Exactly how described!!! Can’t wait for my daughter to ask and give it to her confirmation sponsor. It’s also came earlier than I expected. Colours were exactly what I expected. The quality is amazing. The images couldn’t be any better. I’m very happy with his product and highly recommend it.

They turned out exactly as we had hoped and we looked good even when we didn't bowl well. The printing was perfect and you can only see 9 pins on the shirt(the 5 pin hidden behind the headpin) which worked for us as we bowled in a 9 pin No-Tap league.

Basic Dark T-Shirt, Navy Blue, Small
The shirt I ordered was too small. I contacted Zazzle and they replaced it with a larger size. Very happy.
