Death and the Fox Hunt postcard: This is one of a series of vintage art/ Illustrations from: The English Dance of Death book published in 1816,art by Thomas Rowlandson circa 1815. Here you have Death pulling up the tablecloth that a cowering gentleman is hiding under in a grand hall. by the dress of the riders and the horses and hounds all around it appears he was in the midst of a fox hunt when death came calling but has managed to temporarily hide in his estate. A pretty unusual rendition of The Dance of Death, or Danse Macabre art/ genre stylised Deaths approach of people of all stations and walks of life, reaffirming that Death is the great leveler/equalizer. They were produced as an artistic genre of religious works from the 1400s thru the 1800s, period to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain are the glories/pleasures of earthly life
