The guard is wearing the traditional Royal Life Guard uniform with a blue cap and is carrying a rifle on his shoulder as he performs his ceremonial duties. The red sentry boxes add to the ceremonial display. The Royal Life Guards are more usually photographed wearing tall and heavy bearskin hats, but this photograph was taken on a July day, so perhaps this is the summer headgear. Amalienborg is the official residence for the Danish royal family. The palace complex has four identical Classical façades, effectively four palaces, with Rococo interiors, laid around an octagonal courtyard.
