Off to War with Death postcard: This is a vintage art/ Illistration from: The English Dance of Death book published 1816, art by Thomas Rowlandson circa 1815. Here you have a young man getting ready to follow the call to war, his last moments with his young lady and the ugly truth that Death may very well claim him before she sees him again. The Dance of Death, or Danse Macabre art/ genre you see Death approach people of all stations and walks of life, reaffirming that Death is the great leveler/equalizer. They were produced as an artistic genre of religious works from the 1400s thru the 1800s, period to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain are the glories/pleasures of earthly life.
