Danakil Depression, Mekele, Afar Region Postcard

The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth, a geological crossroads where three tectonic plates are pulling apart. This alien landscape is defined by neon-coloured hydrothermal pools, vast salt pans, and active volcanoes like Erta Ale. Despite the extreme conditions, the Afar people have lived here for centuries, mining 'white gold' or salt blocks which are transported by camel caravans. It is a place of raw, primordial beauty where the Earth's crust is at its thinnest, revealing vibrant deposits of sulphur, iron, and manganese.
