Cotton Grass, Unalaska Island Postcard

The cotton grass shown in this photo is one of two species found on Unalaska Island. This species, russeolum, has a single flowering head which is voluminous. The other species, angustifolium, has three heads on slender stems arising from the flower stalk and it is more wispy in appearance. Cotton grass is a member of the sedge family. In autum the flowering heads break apart to release the seeds. The downy fluff attached to them acts as a windcatcher to disperse the seeds.
