L'Italia è un'isola che si immerge nel Mediterraneo. Questo mare (io qui mi rivolgo anche agli Inglesi che forse in questo momento sono alla radio), questo mare per la Gran Bretagna è una strada, una delle tante strade, piuttosto una scorciatoia con la quale l'Impero britannico raggiunge più rapidamente i suoi territori periferici. Sia detto tra parentesi che quando un italiano, il Negrelli, progettò il taglio dell'istmo di Suez, soprattutto in Inghilterra fu considerato un mentecatto. Se per gli altri il Mediterraneo è una strada, per noi Italiani è la vita. Noi abbiamo detto mille volte, e ripeto dinanzi a questa magnifica moltitudine, che noi non intendiamo di minacciare questa strada. Non ci proponiamo di interromperla, ma esigiamo d'altra parte che anche i nostri diritti ed interessi vitali siano rispettati.
