Copper Canyon Postcard

The Copper Canyon, or Barranca del Cobre, is a series of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental that are larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. This vast wilderness is the traditional home of the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) people, famous for their long-distance running abilities. The region is best explored via the El Chepe train, which winds through tunnels and over soaring bridges. The landscape is a dramatic mix of pine-covered peaks and deep, copper-toned gorges that turn green during the rainy season. The sheer verticality of the canyon walls and the immense scale of the vistas create a sense of profound isolation and natural majesty. The air is crisp and the colours shift from the deep oranges of the rock to the dark greens of the alpine forests.
