Commemorative Civil War Lincoln Statue, Lytle Park Notebook

This is an up-close and personal view of the statue of President Abraham Lincoln in Lytle Park, Cincinnati, OH. It is a internationally known commemoration of the U.S. Civil War, when the Republican party was steeped in values, facing a moral dilemma in slavery and a sense of right and wrong worth dying for. The statue is closely cropped to the face for drama and impact. This was Teddy Roosevelt's favourite statue of Lincoln, while Lincoln's son, Robert Todd, really did not like the portrayal. Donated to the city of Cincinnati by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phelps Taft. His brother President William Howard Taft attended the unveiling in 1917. The sculpture by George Grey Barnard (NY) first shocked Cincinnatians with its gaunt and weary features but later gained international fame. Lytle Park was founded in Cincinnati in 1907. The statue was restored as a gift to the city by sculptor Eleftherios and Mercene Karkadoulias.
