Clonmacnoise is one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites. During the Dark Ages it preserved Europe’s education, literature and heritage, educating noblemen from many different countries. The vast area is spread out over many acres and is cradled by the mighty Shannon River in Ireland’s midlands. Many of the high kings of Ireland are buried in the peaceful cemetery that is presided over by round towers, Celtic high crosses, churches and cathedrals.
