The Windmill on the Onbekende Gracht, Amsterdam, 1874 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. Monet returned to the Netherlands in 1874 and painted a group of Amsterdam views built around canals, boats and familiar Dutch landmarks. Here a windmill rises beside the Onbekende Gracht, but the traditional motif is treated through the same modern interest in water and atmosphere that shaped his French landscapes. Reflections loosen the forms along the canal and prevent the architecture from becoming rigid. The picture belongs to a period when Monet was testing how urban structures could remain recognizable while still being transformed by moving water, muted weather and rapidly changing light.
