The Cliff, Étretat, Sunset (Étretat, soleil couchant), 1882-1883 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. Monet spent about three weeks at Étretat in February 1883, repeatedly painting its cliffs despite cold weather and difficult rocky terrain. This sunset view features the dramatic rock formations known as the Elephant and the Needle. He built the hazy atmosphere from quick, individual strokes of bright colour, while wet paint layered into the setting sun creates partial colour mixtures on the canvas.
