Claude Monet - Doges' Palace Tile
The Doge's Palace (Le Palais ducal), 1908 - Claude Monet, oil on canvas. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter. During his only Venetian journey, Monet repeatedly painted major buildings from positions on or beside the water. The Doge's Palace became one of the motifs through which he tested how architecture could dissolve into atmosphere. Instead of recording the ornate façade precisely, he subordinated detail to sunlight, haze and reflections on the lagoon. The palace remains recognizable, but its pale mass is integrated with the water and sky. This approach links the Venice paintings to Monet's earlier serial studies of London, Rouen and the Seine.
