The haunted house is identified in both languages as the "house of ghosts," but the term mōstellāria comes from the ancient Latin comic playwright Plautus. 2. Vampires are tricky in more ways than one. The ancients don't seem to have had a monster conforming precisely to Dracula and his ilk. Lamia, a sort of Libyan queen of the damned, was used to scare (and eat) both Greek and Roman children. The other Greek word means "blood sucker." The additional Latin word is a "leech" and figuratively, therefore, a good choice for vampire. 3. The clown was too creepy to pass up, and clown costumes are rampant at parties.
