City of Providence in 1872 Postcard
This was how Providence, Rhode Island looked when John and Eliza arrived in 1872. It was a sad time for the family, as young Patrick was ill with spinal meningitis. He soon passed away and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery. John found work as a brick layer in the city. They lived at number 6 Jessamine in Providence. Eliza was pregnant with their fifth child Mary Ellen. Not long after her birth, they decided to return to Ireland. Leaving behind John’s mother, who remained with her children Margaret and Thomas, they boarded yet another ship and returned to Ireland.
