City - NY - Tastee's and Macy's 1942 Tile

Colorized photo from 1942 Original Title: New York, New York. Macy's department store at Herald Square Photographer: Marjory Collins Location: 151 West 34th St. Macy's has had a long history, he started in 1851, where he had his first building built on 14th St. This is his second and largest store, built in 1901. At one point there was a street car line running where that bus is, in fact, that bus has the exact same route as the streetcar did! Now its 1942, WW2 is going on right now, so we see some Uncle Same propaganda, and flags to buy bonds and war stamps. Otherwise it looks the same more or less. If you went back to the 1930's, that hot dog place, was a small place. It seems they expanded quite a bit. Originally this building had a series of pedestal globe lights on the roof and balcony. I can only imagine that they must have blown off at some point, and that's why they don't have them here in this picture or in modern times. In fact today, those balconies don't exist at all. I would imagine that over the years they would be hard to maintain, not much point in leaving them there. But they probably had their own reasons, like maybe, pigeons?
