【Maru ni Seigaiha】A pattern popular during the Edo period (1603-1868). The design was created by Kansai Seikai, a lacquer craftsman, during the Genroku era (1688-1704). 'Seigaiha' is the name of a piece of traditional Japanese court music (Gagaku), and dancers wear a layered robe (shitagasane no ho) with the Seigaiha pattern while performing. The pattern consists of layered concentric waves, and Kansai Seikai popularized it during the Bunroku era (1592-1596). (Excerpted from 'Kamon Hyakuwashi (Ge)' by Danwa Mototsugu). This design was created based on the same book (as of May 3, 2013).
