Church Bell Tower in Truchas, New Mexico Postcard
A tin bell tower tops a small adobe church, now an art gallery, in Truchas, New Mexico, on the High Road to Taos. The Spanish founded Truchas (which means trout in Spanish) in 1754, and the town is at an elevation of more than 8,000 feet. Early inhabitants transported water from a nearby trout stream. The settlement is mentioned in Willa Cather's 1927 novel Death Comes for the Archbishop, Book Two Chapter 2. Robert Redford's "The Milagro Beanfield War" (1988) was filmed on location in Truchas, and employed a number of local inhabitants as actors in smaller roles in the movie. Many artists have opened studios in the town.
