This lovely scene contains a message. The fishermen's children with their shabby clothes and meagre toys give us a picture of their future. The eldest boy carries the burden of the family on his shoulders and the boat represents the hard life at sea. Jozef Israels first painted this theme in 1863. It was extremely popular and Israels repeated it many times after that.
