In 1927 prohibition Chicago, Deputy Chief Stege (right) hands out machine guns to detectives while Chief of Detectives Shoemaker (fourth from left) looks on. Police could not contend with gangster's massive firepower, so they were forced to upgrade to the Thompson sub-machine gun (known as the Chicago Typewriter), which evened the fight.
