They don't bark, but they make happy sounds like a chortle or yodel and when they are sad, they wail. The Basenji is a member of the Hound Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1944. Other names for this breed include: African Bush Dog, African Barkless dog, Ango Angari, Avuvi, Congo Dog, Zande Dog and the Jumping up and down dog. The title character in the 1954 novel, 'Good-bye, My Lady' by James H. Street was a Basenji. This is the perfect dog breed gift, telling all about Basenjis. I was originally happy about my purchase and Nana loved the gift. HOWEVER, the description specifically says that these are microwave and dishwasher safe, BUT the first time Nana put this mug in the dishwasher it was destroyed. Not impressed..
