About This Design
Chase County, Kansas, Courthouse Postcard
The Chase County Courthouse, designed in French Renaissance (Second Empire) style with a red mansard roof, is one of the most recognizable buildings in Kansas. The courthouse sits at the end of a wide brick street in Cottonwood Falls. Completed in 1873, it's the oldest county courthouse still in use in Kansas and the second oldest in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. Chase County was named for Salmon Portland Chase (January 13, 1808 – May 7, 1873), an American politician and jurist who served as U.S. Senator from Ohio and the 23rd Governor of Ohio; as U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln; and as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States.
