Vintage illustration wild animal mammals design featuring two chamois by Cuthbert Edmund Swan. From "My First Book of Animals" by Lena Dalkeith, c. 1918. The chamois (Rupicapra spp.) is a goat-antelope genus native to mountains in Europe. Alpine chamois arrived in New Zealand in 1907 as a gift from the Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph I in exchange for specimens of living ferns, rare birds and lizards. Chamois leather is traditionally made from the hide of the chamois animals. It is very smooth and absorbent and is preferred in cleaning, buffing, and polishing because it produces no scratching.
